Zentrum für Graphische Datenverarbeitung (ZGDV) - Research Organisation


In 1984 the Computer Graphics Center (ZGDV) was established as a European platform for significant application-oriented training, research, and development in the field of computer graphics. Jointly supported by the Technical University of Darmstadt, the Fraunhofer Society, and numerous companies and institutions, ZGDV promotes the use of computer graphics for training and research purposes. The department "Digital Storytelling" of ZGDV forms an interdisciplinary team, mainly from the fields of computer science and of multimedia design. It represents a research area that aims at new production methods for narrative multimedia applications and human computer interaction in digital products for everybody. The main focus of work is on concepts of multimodal interfaces incorporating natural conversations and storytelling ("Conversational User Interfaces", "Interactive Storytelling") as well as work on authoring and development environments for digital applications to be used by non-programmers. The most important projects are the German focus projects EMBASSI (BMBF) and MAP (BMWi), the VR/AR project GEIST (BMBF), Virtual Human (BMBF), art-E-fact (EU IST), as well as "Telebuddy" for Expo2000 or DinoHunter (Dinosaurs applications for the Senckenberg museum in Frankfurt, Germany). ZGDV organizes the TIDSE (International Conference on Technologies for Interactive Digital Storytelling and Entertainment) conference series.
